1) Where did you grow up? Stockton, CA.
2) Educational background: B.F.A Theater Arts from Stephens College in Columbia, MO.
3) What is your earliest theatre memory and how did you initially get involved? Lights sparking, flats falling, actors with concussions- all in the same night. I started doing theater my Sophomore year in high school. I had signed up for piano as an elective and was put into choir instead. I do not sing (you’re welcome) and my only other option was the Stagecraft class. Despite many…colorful…events I really enjoyed it and kept on with it the rest of high school and on into college.
4) Most memorable moment in theatre: Seeing my first Broadway show (Avenue Q) in 2006. It remains one of the most memorable performances I’ve been a part of (after all- the audience is a pretty important part to any show!).
5) Favorite ice cream flavor and why: Well- I’m not sure I’ve ever met an ice cream I don’t like, but I’m currently on a mango sorbet kick. Something about the sweet, tangy, earthiness is just so good.
6) What do you love most about theatre? Theatre has the ability to take the same ingredients night after night and return a different result every time. Take a script, cast, design, audience and it’s never the same two nights in a row. In the best of circumstances (no falling flats and concussions) this allows for a wonderful exploration of the world and the human experience. It’s a beautiful thing.
7) Who (in the theatre/entertainment industry) do you find the most inspiring? I know this may seem kinda lame- but I’m really inspired by talking with audience members after the show. Especially people that don’t see much theater. I love talking to someone just turned on to this art form. Their excitement inspires me. I want them to never lose that.
8) All-time favorite play and/or musical? One play and/or musical you’ve yet to see but is next on your list? : All-time favorite play: The Foreigner. Musical: Urinetown or Avenue Q. Next to see: Book of Mormon or Wicked.
9) What is your guilty pleasure? Reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Top Chief and Holmes on Homes on HGTV. I also read obscene amounts of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And you know what? I’m reall don’t feel that guilty about that. So there!
10) Theatre wish list (shows you would like to work on in some capacity): Not any particular show- but I’d love to work on a ballet. And at least one opera- Die Walkure from Wagner’s Ring Cycle would be awesome. But I’d have to have one of those Viking hats to wear backstage, like Bugs Bunny had in his version.
11) If you could describe yourself with a commonly used term, phrase, or piece of equipment related to theatre, what would it be and why? Gaff tape. I excel at holding it all together. On a semi-unrelated note- gaff tape is great for fixing holes in the butt of your pants and the bottoms of your shoes.
12) Finish the following sentence: “If I wasn’t in theatre, I’d probably be…”: You know what, I tried that- lasted about 6 months. If I wasn’t in theatre I’d probably be pretty annoying to everyone around me until they forced me back into rehearsal.
13) Where do you see yourself in five years? Well I’m all sorts of domesticated now (2nd wedding anniversary coming up quick!), so my goals are to keep working on a variety of projects (like this BASH) locally. I don’t want to get myself into a cycle of doing the same thing year after year. I love the evolution of working on new things and with new people. Toss in a cat (no dogs please) and a theater kid of our very own and the 5 year plan is looking pretty good.
14) Who or what continues to inspire you as you work in the theatre? The newbies. New actors, new techs, new audiences. Spreading the bug. Hearing new voices and perspectives. Evolution.
15) Where will I be able to see you/your work when I come to the BASH this year? Stepping out of my Stage Management box, I’ll be Assistant Directing, Lighting and Costume designing.
